Saturday Afternoon Swim

February 17, 2018

The weather has been “chilly” for Los Angeles, so the evening workouts have been a lesson in personal accountability. They make sunny weekend swims seem like a special treat. Today, I attended my first class to become a Master Gardener Volunteer. It is the first of 13, and they happen each Saturday at the John Muir High School in Pasadena. The class ends at 3:00 pm, so I have the perfect amount of time to squeeze in a swim at either the Rose Bowl or Glassell Park.

After today’s class, I decided to go to Glassell Park because I didn’t want to spend the $13 to get into the Rose Bowl. When I arrived I saw that the pool temp was 72 degrees. I have to be honest, I came so close to turning around and just going home. I decided to try it out, and jumped in. And yes, it was cold, but oddly refreshing. I chose to swim in the shallowest lane hoping that some heat from the sun had warmed that area a little more, and I think that saved me.

I took advantage of using the pull buoy during this swim and I’m very happy I did. I felt strong (was it the cold water?) the whole swim and it seemed like I got through 2,000 meters in record time.

The Workout:

  • 4 rounds, 100 free, 150 pull, 50 free/breast
  • 500 pull
