Saturday Swim
January 13, 2018
A few weeks ago, I registered for a class at the Huntington Gardens (“Spines & Stitches”; we sketched cactus and succulents in the Huntington’s desert garden, then transposed the sketch on a tea towel, then started embroidering our design) so that gave me the opportunity to swim at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. It was a gorgeous, sunny, and warm day (85 degrees!) and it wasn’t an evening swim, so I was more than ready to jump in.
When I arrived, a swim meet was going on, so I watched that for a few minutes. It was fun to see the kids jumping in a racing and a lot of memories came flooding back from my high school meets. The main pool was being used for the meet, so I headed over to the recreation pool where all kinds of things were happening: dive team practice, swimming lessons, recreation swim, therapy swim, and a few lap swim lanes. I was lucky to see a swimmer just leaving a lap lane, so I jumped in and ended up having the entire lane to myself for the whole swim. Win!
It was when I jumped in that I remembered what wasn’t so great about the recreation pool: the temperature of the water was set quite high. It must be kept in the mid-80s because it felt like water and air temp were about the same. I usually feel the temperature difference when my arms come out of the water, but it all felt like one hot environment. The higher water temperature made me wish I was swimming at Culver with their cooler water…I guess the water is always sweeter in the other pool, eh?
